How a Personal Styling Session Works: Holiday Season Edition

The holiday calendar has a way of filling up quickly. One minute you’re planning ahead, and the next you’re wondering what to wear for a holiday party, Christmas family photos, or New Year’s Eve. If deciding what to put on feels like one more thing on your list, a personal styling session can make the process feel much simpler.
And no, it has to be a big wardrobe overhaul. Sometimes you just need a thoughtful second opinion, a few fresh outfit ideas, or help finding pieces that work for a particular occasion. Here’s how my styling process works, from your first note to choosing the pieces you want to wear.
First, tell me what you need
Every styling request starts with you. On the styling page, you can share a little about your style, the occasion, and what you need help finding. You don’t have to arrive with all the answers, or even know exactly what kind of help to ask for. A few details are a lovely place to start.
For a holiday-season request, that could mean telling me you have a few events coming up and want to feel more put together. Or perhaps you have one special evening in mind and would like help finding a look that feels like you. You might already have an outfit you love but need help with the finishing touches. Whatever the starting point, the aim is to understand how you want to show up and what feels comfortable for you.
It helps to share practical details, too. Tell me what you enjoy wearing, what you tend to avoid, and whether there are certain colors, silhouettes, or pieces you’d like to include. If you have inspiration photos, you can mention those as well. They can help explain the mood you’re drawn to, even if you can’t quite put it into words.

Then, I put together your looks
Once I understand your occasion and preferences, I think through the clothing, details, and combinations that could suit the moment. The goal isn’t to chase every holiday trend or dress you like someone else. It’s to create a clear direction that feels polished and still feels like you.
For seasonal events, there are often a few different things to consider. A work gathering may call for a different level of polish than a relaxed celebration with friends. For New Year’s Eve, you might want a look that feels a little more special while still being comfortable enough to enjoy the evening. And if you’re coordinating outfits with a partner for an event, we can think about how your looks work side by side without making them too matchy.
Those are just examples of the kinds of occasions you can ask about, not a one-size-fits-all formula. Your plans, personal taste, and comfort matter more than a rule that says everyone should wear the same thing for the holidays.
Start with the feeling you want
If you’re not sure what to ask for, try describing the feeling you want your outfit to give you. Maybe you want to feel confident, elegant, relaxed, or a little more festive than usual. You can also tell me what you want to avoid: perhaps you don’t want anything too fussy, too revealing, or difficult to move around in.
You don’t need to know fashion terminology to explain yourself. “I want something that feels special but not overdone” gives me a useful starting point. So does “I’d love to wear a color I don’t usually choose, but I still want the outfit to feel familiar.” The more honestly you share, the easier it is to shape ideas around you.

Finally, you shop the pieces
After I put together the look direction, you can shop for the pieces in your own way. You’ll have a clearer idea of what to look for and how the parts can come together, rather than starting from scratch with a closet full of possibilities.
A simple styling direction can also help you make better use of what you already own. Maybe you have shoes or accessories that could finish the look, or a favorite piece that can become the starting point. You don’t have to replace your whole wardrobe to feel refreshed for the season. Sometimes a few considered choices make all the difference.
If you’re looking for extra fashion and lifestyle inspiration, you can also browse my curated finds on Amazon. They’re a separate place to explore ideas and favorites; your styling request can be focused on what you’re actually looking for.
A thoughtful gift for the person who’s hard to shop for
A styling session, or simply styling help for a particular occasion, can be a personal gift for someone who enjoys fashion but doesn’t always know what to buy. It may be especially meaningful for a partner or loved one preparing for an important event.
The best version of this gift leaves room for the recipient’s own taste. You could share the idea with them and invite them to tell me what they’d like help with, rather than choosing a look on their behalf. That way, the styling begins with what they enjoy wearing and what would make them feel good.
I also offer a For Him service. I can help pull together a look for a partner for a proposal, wedding, date night, or event, or help style both partners side by side so the two looks feel right together. If you’re thinking of gifting styling help, you can mention the occasion and what you have in mind when you get in touch, and we can talk through the next step.

Do’s and don’ts for getting the most out of styling
Do share the real occasion. A general idea like “holiday event” is a start, but details about the setting, dress code, and how you’ll spend the evening help make the recommendations more useful.
Do be honest about comfort. If you don’t like heels, clingy fabrics, or anything that needs constant adjusting, say so. Feeling good in an outfit matters.
Do bring your questions and favorites. If there’s a piece you love, a color you’re curious about, or an outfit problem you keep running into, let me know. These are helpful clues.
Don’t feel like you need a perfect brief. It’s okay to be unsure. You can start with the occasion and a few thoughts about what you like.
Don’t shop before you know what you’re looking for. If you can, pause on impulse purchases until you have a clearer direction. It’s easier to choose pieces when you know how they’ll fit into the look.
Don’t feel pressured to choose something that doesn’t feel like you. Styling should give you options and clarity, not take away your say in what you wear.
Ready to talk through a holiday look?
My styling sessions are for everyday life, work, events, and special moments. To ask about one, fill out the get-in-touch form on the Styled By Rachel styling page. Tell me what you’re styling for and what kind of help you need, and I’ll reply personally to talk through the next step.
You don’t have to have the whole look figured out before you reach out. Sometimes all you need is a place to begin, and a little help seeing the possibilities.
